Holistic Equality and Cultural Capability

“Everyone counts” – NHS Sheffield’s Equality Diversity and Human Rights Conference This unique programme by Ferns Associates represents the first serious attempt at presenting a unified approach to tackling discrimination and promoting a holistic approach to a range of Equalities. At the same time, recognising the different legacies of various forms of oppression, valuing cultural diversity and respecting the different life experiences of individuals. The Holistic Equality and cultural Capability (HECC) programme presents a deeper understanding of culture and views problems of discrimination on institutional as well as group and individual levels.

 

Joint Practice between Interpreters and Approved Social Workers
This two-day course brings ASW’s and Interpreters together to understand more about each other’s roles and define good practice in interview situations with service users who do not have English as their first language. There are some practical exercises to develop the skills of Interpreters and ASW’s as well as consideration of equality and diversity issues in working with BME service users.

Social Model Approaches for Care Managers

This four-day course was designed as part of a Post Qualification Social Work programme for Birmingham Social Care and involved several service user trainers covering issues around social model approaches. Holistic and anti-discriminatory approaches to assessment and person-centred planning were covered and empowerment and recovery models investigated from a service user perspective.

Transcultural Interviews in Mental Health Work
The two-day programme explores the complex nature of culture and introduces a multi-layered model of culture which is then applied to mental health work. Good practice in transcultural interviewing is defined and issues of working with interpreters briefly covered.

Race Equality and Learning Disabilities
This course looks at race and culture issues BME people with learning disabilities and applies a social model approach to identifying people’s needs. The issue of multiple discrimination is examined and holistic packages of assistance, including the use of Direct Payments is discussed.

Support, Time and Recovery Worker Training
In this one-day course, the new role of STR workers is defined and the fundamental concepts of personal and family support in community and individual recovery are defined. Reflective practice and multi-agency working is promoted. The social inclusion agenda in relation to the STR role is also covered.

Training for Race Equality Trainers

The programme covers the fundamental skills required for race equality training including the basic concepts in equality and diversity, facilitation skills, managing group dynamics, co-training in diverse training teams, design and delivery of race equality training materials. There are opportunities to practice and develop personal skills around these core issues.

Personal Development Programme for Service Users / Survivors
This more extensive programme is delivered over a period of several months and starts with reflection on personal development and learning needs and then constructs a Personal Development Plan for each participant. Individuals are given support and mentoring as well as skills and knowledge inputs to enable them to design, plan and complete a personal project in their locality to improve mental health services.
