ESC Advanced Module - Race Equality and Cultural Diversity Practice Development Workbook
Ferns Associates have been working with The National Institute for Mental Health in England (NIMHE) since November 2005 to develop and deliver Race Equality and Cultural Capability (RECC) training materials as part of the Delivering Race Equality (DRE) strategy and in response to the Inquiry into the death of David ‘Rocky’ Bennett.

Essential Shared Capabilities Module 5.

This is the RECC introductory module in Essential Shared Capabilities foundation materials which precedes the the main RECC materials which are at Advanced ESC level. This material is useful for induction of new staff.

There are many complex and systemic problems highlighted in services by the analysis of institutional discrimination on the basis of race, culture, gender, sexuality, age and other social factors but this is why we have to recognise that promoting race equality and cultural capability is an ordinary part of good practice for everyone involved in delivering mental health services in a diverse society. There is plenty of evidence that specific experiences of BME people in mental health services, from the ‘Count Me In’ census (CHAI, 2007) and The Service User Survey undertaken by Ferns Associates (MHAC, 2006) and other major studies, are not explained by mere cultural differences or ethnically specific phenomena.

This presentation was created by Miriam Morgan, Acting Race Equality Lead, CSIP South West. She describes the activities in her Region following two RECC Training for Trainers programmes delivered in January 2008.

Here is an interesting extract about a comparison of DRE's RECAP programme and Ferns Associates' RECC programme and their suitability for training CDWs. A workshop was delivered for each training programme (RECAP and RECC) to the same group of CDWs and a robust evaluation conducted to make this comparison.
